Thomas Germain has had his portrait painted by Largillière, in company of his wife, Anne-Denise Gauchelet, in his workroom. The artist, with one hand laid on a large silver ewer, points with the other at a candelabrum adorned with figures of fauns and nymphs.

"...While Besnier and Ballin maintained their ties with the ealier stages in the development of the style, the Prince of Rocaille silversmiths himself, the great Thomas Germain, was known and appreciated as early as the Regency period. The reason he is given first place rather than one or another of his colleagues is attributable to the fact that he alone possessed those qualities that are generally shared between several artists, and exercised them to perfection.

He was born in 1673, he was taught how to draw by the painter Boulogne the Elder. Louvois' patronage enabled him to go to Rome in 1688. A long stay in Italy made him familiar with antiquity and the great art of the Peninsula. He returned to Paris in 1706, became master craftsman in 1720, silversmith to the King, was granted lodgings at the Louvre, became a Municipal Magistrate of Paris in 1738, was raised to noble rank, and remained, until his death in 1748, one of the most appreciated suppliers to the Court of France and one of the most famous master craftsman outside the Kingdom. ..."
